21st Century Schools for All Children

Your Laurel School District is going to referendum on February 10, 2010, in order to seek your support in constructing new 21st century schools for all our children. Each school has a set of proposed sites and designs for all schools for you to review. There will also be two community meetings in January to answer any questions the voters might have. The state has very generously offered to fund 74% of the total cost to build our schools. Our cost will be spread out over 20 year bonds.

Our current schools simply cannot support the needs of the 21st century student. Technology has become a major factor in our children’s lives, from cell phones to IPods to WII’s to Smart Boards, and even to PowerPoint presentations in our local churches. Next year our students will be required to take the state achievement tests on-line and our school buildings are having a difficult time supporting technology in our classrooms. The electric outlets and main switch boxes cannot handle the power draw when teachers and students are accessing technology from their classrooms. Students will take the state tests three times per year and just cannot have technology issues preventing them from performing as they should.

The state of Delaware has determined that our buildings have out-lived their usefulness. The single-pane windows and steam boilers are working against each other. Window air conditioners are draining our electrical resources. Accessibility, functionality, and maintenance issues are daily occurrences. Our maintenance men are having to create parts because our equipment is so old replacement parts are no longer necessary in some cases. As many parents have told me over the past week, our children deserve better schools and our building program is long overdue. Cost effectiveness-our new schools will be Green, and we will have three buildings to heat and cool, a reduction from the seven we currently operate.

Join us on February 10th at Laurel High School, between the hours of 10am and 8:00pm, and vote in favor of new schools for our children. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our Central Office at 302-875-6100, click on our link for the latest PowerPoint presentation, refer to Frank Calio’s blog, or visit any of our schools and check out the handbook each principal has.
